the man known as dj nature holds a long and illustrious list of releases that spans all the way back to the early 90s, when, as nature boy, the bristol born dj and producer was carving out sample heavy house music for labels like ruff disco records and the underworld affiliated tomato label. his relatively modern re-incarnation, as dj nature, has seen singles and two albums come correct on revered labels like golf channel recordings and jazzy sport. following on from futureboogies landmark 50th release, dj nature drops a heavyweight four track ep on the bristol label, each track promising and delivering summertime vibes in abundance. born lifted, with its deft guitar licks and soulful vocal chops over lazy, hazy beats, is a great example of the nature aesthetics that make his tracks so very popular across the house fraternity. my life picks up the pace, deploying granite hard snares and cosmic chords with dusted vocal samples. on the flip, what it isnt packs some jazz chops with its sampled pianos and saxophone riffs over a discordant beat that swings with the best of them, whilst ep closer loving u more again serves up some delicious summertime grooves with the perfect marriage of deep, funky bass and seductive samples.

originally released in 1997 during the heyday of the alternative uk electro scene, finley quaye’s debut “maverick a strike” struck a chord with many. fusing dub, reggae, pop, triphop and indie, his amalgam of styles resonated throughout the music world like no other record at the time.

segun bucknor fell in love with american soul music as a student at new york’s columbia university. otis redding, wilson pickett, sam cooke and ray charles hadn’t made much of a splash in africa at the time and when bucknor returned to nigeria in 1968, he was determined to bring the sound to a wider audience.
the result was brand of afro-soul that in turn became a proto-type of afrobeat. with his bands, the assembly and the revolution, he released a few politically charged tracks, but even with his energetic dance trio, the sweet things, turning up the heat, bucknor couldn’t compete with fela kuti.

in 2017, the finnish jazz scene seems to bubble with talent. one of the most prominent players in this mix is by definition, trumpeter jukka eskola. after over a decade of adventures in different spaces of jazz – from the dance floor burn of the five corners quintet to the raw expressive modes of mikko innanen’s small big band, jimi tenor’s cosmic jazz and his own prime cti styled solo recordings – eskola takes things back to bare basics. and as usual, when it’s done right, it’s the best thing out there.

following the big success of the tmng001 catalogue, label-head yaya strikes back on his own label with another wicked release. his second ep called ‘unconditional love’ also features the first tamango remixer ever and we’re more than proud to have ‘panorama bar’ lady cassy on board. the ep kicks off the things with entitled ‘unconditional love’ which features yaya’s typical trademark groove with some extra great tribal-drums contaminations combined with a great caribbean-oriented female chant, giving life to a proper dancefloor burner. a2 is about cassy. she has been into the music industry since 2003 when she moved to berlin and she’s fresh of her latest album ‘donna’ on ‘aus music’ last year. she provides a beautiful and heavier interpretation of ‘unconditional love’, adding crisp percussions and pure analogic spatial pad, creating a dreamlike dimension surrounded by the massif utilization of pitched endless vocals. the b-side contains the dub version of ‘unconditional love’ for the ones who need a precise and outspoken tool without the vocal part. closing the ep is ‘lone wolf’ which is the prove to dispel any doubt on yaya’s producing skills: the track immediately approaches into softer sonority with nimble analogic and syncopated synths and rapid drums, with hi-hats and shakers only, for another tamango unmissable chapter.

at a time when bandleaders in nigeria used titles as an affectation, dr. adolf ahanotu was the real deal. he had a phd in music compilation and master’s degrees in education and communication. he also played a mean tenor sax, an instrument he mastered touring owerri with the mirabels.

finnish techno icon mono junk aka kim rapatti joins forces with berlin based freestyle man aka klas sasse lindblad, known for his productions on classic labels like sähkö and moodmusic. pata ep starts with the hard hitting techno title ‘not a love story’, haunting vocals, simple synthline, slicing percussion and deep bassdrum, all u need to make an effect, this must be heard in a big sound system. following with ‘need your lovin’ the ep takes a more electro approach, mesmerising love story with jupiter-8 bassline and 808 beats accompanied with vocals on this track too by mr rapatti. the ep ends with ‘stella polaris’, a production which started as a jam in 2007 in berlin at sasse’s blackhead studios and was finished 10 years later in 2017 in the same location. reminiscing of early 90s electronica time when everything was pure and gold and when these fellows also were starting their careers. ‘stella polaris’ leaves no one cold with emotional themes of analog synthesis and depth of the bass.

when armand van helden pronounced todd invented the game. the rest of us are just playing it he articulated a feeling that had existed in the house music community ever since todd terry became the toast of the dancefloor with a brash, brand new sound that combined the rhythms of house with the attitude of hip hop. those early productions, struck through with raw energy, low-fi production and heavily manipulated samples set the tone to come for new york house and in the process, propelled todd to one of the first internationally known dj/producers

the first record from the mysterious monsieur blue attracted plenty of favourable attention from the deep house and minimal fraternity when it dropped last year, and so the anonymous artist rolls around for a second bout with this sterling three-tracker. deep and dubby pads meet with rock-solid grooves on the a1, while the a2 track strips things back to an insistent rhythm, emphasising the space in the mix. the b-side track meanwhile channels a funky energy into the spaced out headspace monsieur blue inhabits, completing a strong trio of club-ready trippers for the dreamiest of dancefloors.

bonnie prince billy aka will oldham veröffentlicht mit “best troubador” eine hommage an einen seiner ewigen helden, country- und folk-ikone merle haggard. das werk von haggard begleitet bonnie prince billy nun schon seit mindestens 25 jahren. so coverte er nicht nur bei seinem ersten öffentlichen auftritt einen haggard-song. auch in den folgenden jahre seiner karriere bezog sich oldham immer wieder auf das werk und wirken haggards. das vorhaben, das nun im mai erscheinende album aufzunehmen, begleitete oldham schon eine ganze weile. das ziel war es, an der uralten tradition teilzuhaben, folk-songs an die nächste generation weiterzutragen. fast legte oldham das projekt auf eis, als er im april 2016 vom tod merle haggards erfuhr. statt in einem studio in nashville aufzunehmen, zogen sich oldham und seine mitmusiker zugunsten einer familiären aufnahme-atmosphäre in ein heimstudio zurück. so wurde dem andenken haggards werk durch besondere wärme und intimität würdevoller tribut gezollt.
die songs auf “best troubador” stammen aus allen schaffensphasen haggards. angefangen bei seinem 1967er album “i am a lonesome fugitive” bis hin zu seinem 47. album von 2011, “working in tennessee”, ist es allerdings kein simples best-of geworden, stattdessen kuratierte oldham die songauswahl entlang seiner persönlichen favoriten aus merles katalog.
